On Effective Parenting and Personal Development: The Importance of Observation

Self-development is essential for effective parenting. And the key to development is observation. First and foremost, we need to become good observers. We should carefully observe our surroundings, ourselves, the environments we are in, our behaviors, our reactions to different behaviors, and the responses we receive from others.

Only by becoming good observers can we develop awareness, and only through awareness can we achieve meaningful goals in life. What is our vision for ourselves? What is our vision for our children? We must first observe, draw conclusions, and then set goals and move toward them. We should break larger goals down into smaller, manageable steps and begin with small, purposeful goals. We must remember that small goals come together to create larger achievements.

While observing, we must never forget one important point: The purpose of observation is not to judge others. What may seem good or bad, right or wrong from our perspective may carry a completely different meaning from another point of view. People differ in terms of their experiences, levels of awareness, education, and readiness to learn. These differences naturally create diversity in perspectives. The primary purpose of our observations should be development. And development will inevitably bring change.

In addition, when planning our goals, we need to recognize—and be honest with ourselves about—one important question: Are we genuinely willing to pursue the development we aspire to achieve? If we are truly willing, a path will always open before us; if we are not, we will perceive obstacles along the way. Good observation leads to realistic goals, while willingness brings effort. Behind the most remarkable achievements, there is often a story of meaningful and insightful observation.
